翻译“私生子”，英文该不该用“illegitimate”？

今天，一向清净的佛门搅动中外舆论场。

在国内外英文报道中，文刀君注意到一个有趣的细节：在英文中表达“（育有）私生子”时，要不要用“illegitimate”一词，国内外英文媒体写法不一。

在过去的西方社会，孩子是否“婚生”直接影响其法律地位、社会身份甚至继承权，因此 “illegitimate child” 在历史语境或文学作品中并不罕见。但在当代语境中，这个词逐渐受到质疑与反思。

《美联社写作风格指南》（AP Stylebook）明确建议，不应使用 “illegitimate” 这样的词汇来标签化未婚父母所生的孩子。如确有必要提及，可采用更中性的表述方式，如 “children born out of wedlock” 或 “children whose parents were not married”。

Do not refer to the child of unmarried parents as illegitimate. If it is pertinent to the story at all, use an expression such as whose parents were not married.

这一建议的逻辑是：“illegitimate” 原意是“非法的、不正当的”，用来形容孩子，便像是给他们贴上了“天生低人一等”的标签。在强调平等与尊重的语境中，这样的用法未免显得刻薄。换言之，生而为人，不该一开始就被语言宣判等级。

因此我们看到，美联社、英国《卫报》等英文媒体采用较为克制的表达方式，全文也未见“illegitimate”一词，如：

......fathering at least one child.

当然，不少媒体并不理睬这条建议，如《金融时报》、BBC、CNN、Xinhua等英文媒体在报道中并不回避“illegitimate”一词，如：

...... fathering at least one illegitimate child.
